Inflammation In Todays Performance Horses
As avid horsemen and women, we realize that the vigorous daily training and competitions we put our performance horses though is necessary and unfortunately can cause many chronic inflammatory responses in joints, tendons, ligaments and much more. Inflammation is the root cause for many of the problems that keep our equine athletes from competing at their highest potential and/or competing at all. Whether we're just maintaining healthy joints, body soreness, gastro-intestinal function (colic) or recovering from injuries and surgeries it is essential to look at inflammation.

Inflammation, by definition, isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it can be a good thing. When the body is injured, inflammation is part of the immune response -- the body’s healing mechanism -- signaling the white blood cells to attack the injured area to prevent further damage. The problem starts when acute inflammation, the temporary type, turns chronic. All of those chemicals and cells keep on fighting after the fight should be over. That’s when we get further swelling, pain, joint issues, compromised organs and systems and many processes that cause or contribute to many other diseases and conditions. This is why inflammation, when healthy, is in careful balance and maintaining that balance is so important!

The most commonly administered medications for treating painful conditions in horses are phenylbutazone (Bute),flunixin meglumine (Banamine),ketoprofen (Ketofen), and firocoxib (Equioxx). These are classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. These work by blocking the prostaglandin cycle that is part of the inflammatory cascade.
These both exert effects on both COX-1 and COX-2 inflammatory components and thereby have additional and potentially adverse effects on stomach, colon and kidney function. This occurs due to their interference with the “good” prostaglandins that produce protective mucus for the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
Harmful Effects of NSAIDs
In some cases, the over reliance on NSAIDs has proved deadly. Annually, 76,000 people are hospitalized from NSAID-induced gastrointestinal complications. The American Medical Association estimates that from 50-80 percent of those hospitalized for gastrointestinal bleeding are taking some form of NSAIDs. At this stage in the medication-induced bleeding, there is a ten percent chance of fatality.(2)
NSAIDs lethal effects result from the inhibition of the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. NSAIDs block cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the reactions of arachidonic acid to endoperoxide compounds. This process results in the inhibition of gastric prostaglandin E, a hormone which protects the lining of the stomach from acid. After prolonged and frequent ingestion of NSAIDs, the stomach remains defenseless and at increased susceptibility to ulcers, kidney damage and colic.

Fibrin is a protein formed that can significantly impact our horses health, general well-being and performance.
